The Government is to go ahead with a programme to recruit 50,000 Teacher Assistants for national and provincial schools, despite opposition from trade unions. The unions want the Government to recruit them as Teachers, not Teacher Assistants.

However, the Government said they could recruit only Teacher Assistants as the cadre for teachers was full.

It is estimated that 2000 teachers are in excess in the national school cadre of teachers, while it is estimated that 25,000 additional teachers are present in provincial schools.  According to the proposal, plans were underway to recruit the Teacher Assistants who will be required to serve in ‘difficult areas.’

Sri Lanka Teachers Service Union Dhammika Alahapperuma Secretary said the Government’s plan was not acceptable as it was a violation of the service minutes.
