The government had failed to include representatives from all ethnic communities in the education task force that was set up to bring in new reforms to the education sector, the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said this week.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said the 12-member team does not include a single representative from the minority communities.

While it is necessary to bring in education reforms, it is important for suggestions and views of all communities to be included to improve Sri Lanka’s education quality, Mr Stalin said.

He said members appointed were selected haphazardly, including representatives from international schools, and this is contradictory to the concept of free education. This has the potential to jeopardise the whole system, he added.

In the past the National Education Commission (NEC), which was designed to bring in changes to develop education, had submitted several changes to no avail Mr Stalin said.

“Several of their proposals have been ignored. This is another futile exercise that will become a white elephant.”

The government had decided to set up a education task force to work out a ten-point policy framework for the development of the education sector.
