Lack of Tamil teachers leaves O/L students helpless

The low number of qualified Tamil teachers in schools in the Kataragama area has caused many students sitting for Tamil in the GCE Ordinary Level (O/L) exams to face difficulties.

Many students had to go to Matara or Tangalle to learn Tamil, wasting time and money. Many school principals in the area said there is a lack of Tamil medium teachers which has affected all the schools in the Wellawaya educational zone.

Kataragama National school Principal Ms. K.G.Sriyani, said the only Tamil medium teacher who taught at the school, retired several years ago. Since then the school has not had a Tamil teacher.

Ms Sriyani had to hire a teacher who had passed Tamil in the O/L Exams to help the students with the subject.
