Higher Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena said the Government will set up a university college authorised to award diplomas and higher diplomas in media studies.

Speaking at this week’s Diploma in Media Studies and Journalism award ceremony organised by the Sri Lanka Press Council, the minister said the government hopes to open the university college within the next 100 days.

The Minister said there is an interest in media studies among young people, and many join the media field as professionals.

He also said that journalists are not as valued as they were in the past.

Minister Gunawardena said the government hopes to uplift the standard of Sinhala, Tamil and English media. Under President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the government will be supported by the Press Council, university lecturers and media professionals to make this happen.
