Government intends to enhance infrastructure facilities in Estate Schools, in six Provinces, with an Indian grant of Rs 300 million.

The schools to be developed are in the Central, Uva, Sabaragamuwa, Western, North-Western and Southern provinces.

Under this project, schools with poor facilities will be identified and provided with new buildings, sanitary  facilities, drinking water, as well as school equipment.  This would serve to improve the standards of Education of more than 200,000 Estate Children.

A Cabinet paper submitted by Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said most of such schools are ill-equipped and devoid of basic infrastructure. Hence, children of estate workers lack quality education.

Cabinet has approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of India for a Rs 300 million grant for this purpose.
