The Ministry of Education (MoE) is to recruit 2,000 student Counsellors later this month, said Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.
He said they will be assigned to all National schools and to Provincial schools with more than 1,500 students.

Their main task will be to handle issues of students above Grade 6, and they will not be involved in any teaching activities. “Issues among students and issues students face with teachers will be addressed by the Counselors,” he said. He said, initially, the Counselors will brief students about the current situation and encourage them to attend classes.

They will be given a separate area within the school to conduct their Counselling activities. Students will be able to complain directly to the Counselor, who would decided on how the issue should be resolved, including the involvement of outside Agencies, such as the Police, if need be. (DW)
