A group of Teachers’ and Principals’ Unions is requesting the Ministry of Education (MoE) to cancel the transfer of an MoE official, for talking to the media.

In a letter signed by four Unions, namely Ceylon Teachers Union, All Island Teachers Union, Sri Lanka Principals’ Union and Independent Education Service Unions’ have said that the transfer of Malinda Rajapaksa to Hangawella Rajasinghe Vidyalaya, because of a statement he issued to the media, is not justifiable, as he has not done anything wrong.

The MoE official had been penalized for talking to the media, following his appearance at the Commission appointed by the President to Investigate into Corruption from 2015-2018, where he was questioned on the MoE’s Suraksha Insurance scheme.  The Unions also have cited a previous case where, in 2012, the Mahanama Principal P.S. Manohari Palaketiya was transferred for a similar reason and the Supreme Court, in a Fundamental Rights case (SCFR/76/2012) filed by the aggrieved party, had upheld that the Principal had not violated any established code of the MoE, and that the transfer be cancelled.  – CC
