The Ministry of Education (MoE) is to set up a National Content Development Centre (NCDC) to design software required for GCE O/L and A/L students.
“The NCDC, under the purview of the MoE, will be established in Kuliyapitiya, with a US$ 35 million loan provided under an agreement signed with the Korean Government, which will also fund developing the software,” said Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.

The project is due to commence next month and will be completed in two years. In addition to the software required for school education, software will also be developed for universities, technical colleges and other higher education institutions, with development of applications being part of the tasks.

“This would reduce spending on development of various software required for the Education system, which is currently entrusted to the private sector,” Mr Kariyawasam said. He said they hope to expand the digital learning systems from Grade 6 onwards, without restricting it to the O/L and A/L classes.
He said they hope to recruit the required teachers as well.

“Even private schools could obtain these services once the project is completed,” he added. - Damith Wickremasekara
