Skills Development and Vocational Training Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara, a confidant of President Maithripala Sirisena, has been entrusted with the subject of media, the Department of Government Information said last night.

Accordingly, all departments, statutory bodies and corporations related to media and digital infrastructure have been brought under the purview of the Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training.

Until the dissolution of Parliament on Friday, the subject briefly came under the new government’s State Minister of Media, Keheilya Rambukwella, a ‘Joint Opposition’ member.

However, since the positions of state and deputy ministers ceased to exist with the dissolution of Parliament, Mr. Rambukwella will have no control of state media institutions.

Mr. Rambukwella told the Sunday Times the change was due to a ‘technical issue’, but he did not elaborate.
Government Information Director General Nalaka Kaluwewa said that all media institutions including state television and radio would be under Minister Jayasekara.
