Magistrate recuses himself from CB bond case

Citing personal reasons, Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake recused himself from hearing the crucial Central Bank bond case when it came up for hearing.
He said he had requested the Judicial Services Commission to transfer the case to another magistrate.

Magistrate Dissanayake informed his position to the prosecution and the defence.Following this development, the Attorney General’s Department did not proceed with the day’s hearing.Earlier, lawyers appearing for W.M. Mendis Company and suspects Arjun Aloysius and Kasun Palisena, complained to the magistrate that they were receiving threats and were being unduly influenced.

The Magistrate ordered that Mr. Aloysius and Mr. Palisena be further remanded till November 21. In another development, the Attorney General’s Dept raised no objection to the defence lawyers’ request to lift the travel ban on Perpetual Treasuries Chairman Joseph Aloysius. The Magistrate relaxed the travel ban till November 21 but ordered that it be allowed on a surety bail of Rs. 1 billion and a personal bond.
