Peradeniya VC calls for change from micro to nano technology
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya Upul Dissanayake, said the institute needed to update its programmes from micro-technology to nanotechnology to be in step with international standards and if it wished to attract foreign students to its courses.
He said that facilities were needed to develop and expand nano technology and nuclear science in order to raise the existing standards to international levels.
He added these standards could be reached by the next congress and he would like to see the Post Graduate Institute of Science becoming an internationally accepted institute in order to attract in more foreign students to their courses.
The Vice Chancellor added that the Post Graduate Institute of Science attached to the University of Peradeniya was a platform for scientists to bring their research and provided a forum for discussion for scientists not only in Sri Lanka but also from all over the world.
The Vice Chancellor apologised for the absence of the Minister of Education and Higher Education who was due to chair the proceedings. He said the minister had been unexpectedly ordered to be in Colombo and Additional Secretary H.M.B. Herath of the Ministry of Science and Technology would stand in his stead.
The keynote address was delivered by Professor Zange Pang, an internationally recognised Professor in Hydrology and Geothermal Studies from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, where he is Director.
