‘Hawaiian Hula Night’, a total festival of Hawaiian music, dance and food will come alive at the Hotel Jetwing Sea, in Negombo on 1st September from 7.00pm onwards.

The main entertainment provider of the night will be the popular band ‘C Plus with Chandu’ along with Hawaiian Hula dancers and the dress code will be traditional Hawaiian.

Apart from the exciting activities on the beach, traditional Hawaiian set will be created to experience the real Hawaiian atmosphere with Hawaiian Fashion show, Hawaiian cuisine and fireworks display on the cards.

Hula is a Polynesian dance form accompanied by chant (oli) or song (mele). It was developed in the Hawaiian Islands by the Polynesians who originally settled there.

The hula dramatizes or portrays the words of the oli or mele in a visual dance form. The ‘mele’ is a poetic chant that was historically done in honoor of Polynesian deities. The text was elaborate and long. While the mele was chanted, instruments were played such as drums made of shark skin, gourds, bamboo rattles and stone castanets.

Watching a traditional hula performance is similar to attending a narrated play. Without the narration, the actions of the players would not be as meaningful.

When the dance is done without the chanting and the old instruments, it is a pretty dance but it does not have the impact it has when it accompanies a chant.

Tickets for ‘Hawaiian Hula Night’ are priced at Rs 3250/- including Hawaiian buffet and all entertainment activities.
