Sharmila Jan of Gateway College Colombo gave a sterling performance in the Under-20 girls’ 200 metres on the second day of the 18th International Schools Athletics Championships (ISAC) at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Stadium, Diyagama yesterday.

Sharmila finished the race in 25.27secs which according to IAAF points, she will get 917 points. This is the best performance to date. She has all the capabilities of winning the Under-20 girls’ championship.

In the Under-20 boys’ 200 metres final national level runner Asiri Wijesekera of Gateway College, had a fall at the start of the 200 metres final. However, he continued the race and finished with a time of 26.53 seconds in sixth place. He complained to the chief judge about the mishap. Gateway too made an objection. The appeal board agreed to stage a re-run this morning as the first event at 8.00am. He is the current All-Island champion in the event. That is why the appeal board agreed for the re-run.

Twenty-five international schools are taking part in the meet. In the afternoon defending champions Lyceum Wattala were in front having won 51 medals, including 23 gold medals, 17 silver and11 bronze. Gateway International Colombo was in second place with 25 medals which includes 8 gold, 7 silver and 9 bronze. Lyceum International School Nugegoda are close behind with 23 medals – 7 gold, 7 silver and 9 bronze.

Today is the final day. The closing ceremony will be held with the patronage of Prof. Mohan Silva, Chairman University Grants Commission as the chief guest.

There was strict security at the meet which caused a lot of inconvenience to the athletes, officials and the media. The organisers had not issued media passes and official media cards were not accepted. They were asking for their official media cards which were not issued. This is the first time that such inconvenience was caused for the journalists.
