Akalanka Wijesuriya of St. Peter’s steals limelight

Akalanka Wijesuriya of St. Peter’s College, Colombo stole the limelight at the recently concluded Sir John Tarbat Senior Championship 2017 held at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Diyagama.

This 15-year-old with a bright future ahead of him won a Gold in the Shot Putt event with a throw of 14.78 mtrs and in the Discuss Throw this lad established a new meet record at the John Tarbat Senior meet with a distance of 52.48 mtrs to win the Gold. Wijesuriya was awarded National Schools colours in the senior category.

Year 2017 will be a year that will linger in the memory of this young Peterite for a long time as he came out with excellent performances at every meet held.
In the Colombo South Divisional Sports meet he was placed first in the Shot Putt and Discuss Throw events and representing Colombo South in the Western Province Zonal Sports meet Wijesuriya with distances of 14.28m and 43.26m was at the helm in the Shot Putt and Discuss Throw events respectively.

Showing his prowess at the Western Province Schools Games this youngster was placed first in his favourite events – Shot Putt and Discuss Throw with throws of 14.87m and 46.43mtrs. Wijesuriya was an automatic choice to be selected for the All Island Meet 2017 to be held shortly.

At the schools sports meet this young sensation was adjudged the Best Performer in the Field events and was crowned the Most Outstanding Senior Athlete for establishing a new meet record in Shot Putt. - Lakshman Ranasinghe
