Higher Education (HE) & Highways Ministry Secretary D.C. Dissanayaka said a Bill will be presented to Cabinet for the Quality Assurance of non-State sector HE institutes in the country.

He said the new law will provide for the setting up of an independent council similar to the University Grants Commission.
He added that all Degrees, from Bachelors, Masters and PhD level will have to comply with international standards, to qualify for certification by this Council.

The Degree programmes of State universities, as well as those of private institutes will have to register their programmes with the new Council for certification. The advantage for the students is that, they will be able to decide on genuine HE institutes in which to enroll by its certification. Mr Dissanayaka said those who fail to obtain proper certification will be given adequate time to comply with the required standards. – DW
