Girls overall champions Sri Sangamitta Girls NS Matale

Reigning champions St. Thomas’ Matale and Sri Sangamitta Girls National School Matale retained the boys and girls championships respectively at the Matale education zone schools track and field meet 2017 concluded at Aluvihare MV ground in Matale.

St. Thomas’ Matale accumulated 150 points on their way to clinching boy’s title, while Sri Sangamitta girls earned 98 points during their outstanding effort. Zahira College Matale with 75 points finished runners up in the boy’s championship followed by Hindu college Matale third with 42 points.

In the girls championship St. Thomas’ girl’s school ran in to second place with 58 points followed by Vijaya College Matale close third with 53 points.

Matale Thomians also had the honour of winning two age group categories of individual awards presented to best athlete of each age group.

Over 1000 athletes (boys and girls) representing schools in the Rattota, Yatawaththa, Ukuwela and Matale educational regions competed in the five day athletic meet conducted by the sports education unit of the Matale zonal education office.

Sajith Priyal De Silva of St. Thomas’ Matale was adjudged as the Best Male Athlete for his outstanding performance in the boys U/20 long jump – 6.24 meters, while Nishadani Nakandala of Sri Sangamitta Girls school Matale who finished first with a leap of 4.49 meters in the girls U/18 long jump was named the Best Female Athlete.
