The Royal College Hockey Festival will take place today commencing 7.30 am at the Royal College ground. This competition is being held to promote the game in the school.

The competition is conducted by the Royal College Hockey Association. Involved in the game are 117 players in the age groups of under 11 to 13.

Last year in the contest conducted by the Ministry of Education, Royal College emerged champions at the under 19 All Island School Games held in Colombo.

In order to win future competitions in the under 15, under 17 and under 19, this Festival is being held to popularise and encourage the game of hockey.

The Royal team which emerged champions last year made a tour of Canberra, Australia, this year on the invitation of the Australian High Commissioner of Sri Lanka Skandakumar where they took part in five matches. They won five, drew one and lost one against schools teams and combined teams of Canberra.

The Royal Principal B.A. Abeyratne, Master-In-Charge Athula Senanayake and Hockey Coach Rohana Dissanayake have launched this grassroot level programme to promote hockey. - SP
