Three new practice cricket strips are being built at a cost of Rs 1.67 million under the ‘Semata Sarana’ scheme for Debarawewa National School. Debarawewa National School is the only school in the Hambantota District that has qualified to play in Division II of the Under-19 Cricket Tournament and Division I of the Under-17, Under-15 and Under-13 Tournaments conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association.

It was at the Debarawewa NS ground that national players Suranga Lakmal and Dhananjaya de Silva learnt their basics of the game. The school has received a new boundary rope from Sri Lanka Cricket through the Hambantota DCA and is in need of new matting as at the moment they have been compelled to borrow the matting which has been provided to Debarawewa Sports Club and Tissa Sports Club.

It is almost four and a half years since Debarawewa NS were given a new matting.
