Skipper and left arm spinner Harin Cooray’s impressive match bag figures of 11 for 31 helped St. Joseph’s Colombo record a crushing innings and 191 runs over St. Patrick’s Jaffna in the Under 19 cricket encounter which was also the inaugural contest played for the Rectors trophy concluded at St. Patrick’s grounds in Jaffna yesterday.

The foundation for the win was laid by Dineth Maduarwala who cracked a 105 ball unbeaten knock of 101 that included seven boundaries and a six and supported by half tons from Jehan Daniel, Nipun Samarasinghe and Revan Kelly enabling them to make a formidable score of 386 for 5 declared.

The Patricians in their turn ended day one on 65 for 6. Resuming their innings on day two they lasted only just under nine overs as Harin wrecked their batting with a five wicket haul to bundle them out for a meager 83 runs.

St. Patrick’s made to follow on was left with a daunting task of erasing a mammoth 303 runs and for the second time they found the Joes skipper Harin who ended with impressive figures of 6 for 18 too hot to handle and succumbed for a paltry score of 112 runs an innings which lasted only 43 overs.

Thurstan inflict third defeat for Dharmapala
Thurstan coasted to a convincing ten wicket win over Dharmapala who underwent their third successive outright defeat in as many matches in the match concluded at Pannipitiya yesterday.

Thurstan was in the box seat and looked set to secure an outright win when play stopped for lunch on day two.
The morning session of play on day two saw Thurstan who were well placed on 205 for 2 on day one which came on the back of half tons made by Sawan Prabash and Prageesha Mendis after bowling out Dharmapala for a low score of 118 resuming their innings, going in for quick runs saw them declaring after Prageesha reached his ton with the score on 270 for 5.

Dharmapala batting the second time with a deficit of 152 runs fared better and was able to avoid an innings defeat but they were able to muster a score of only 166 runs leaving a simple run chase of just 15 runs.

Kevin saves Mahinda
Ananda had to be satisfied with a first inning win over Mahinda in their match concluded at Panagoda. K.K. Kevin who made an unbeaten 52 frustrated the Ananda bowlers to deny Mahinda of a victory.

Earlier in the day Ananda in reply to Mahinda’s score of 131 resuming on their overnight score of 131 for 5 went on to make a score of 241 for 9 declared with Supun Waragoda making a top score of 51.

Win for St. Sebastian’s Katuneriya
St. Sebastian’s Katuneriya registered a close first inning win over Sri Devananda College Ambalangoda in the match concluded at Katuneriya.
