Police have warned the public against those who engage in illegal dealings by pretending to provide accommodation to visitors intending to holiday in Nuwara- Eliya.

It was revealed that some people have been getting money fraudulently from local and foreign visitors intending to come to Nuwara – Eliya saying they could provide accommodation during the Spring season in Nuwara Eliya, by advertising such places on the internet and thereby asking intending visitors to deposit money to the credit of the advertiser.

SSP Edmund Mahendra advises visitors not to get caught in a trap but act prudently when seeking facilities through the internet.

The warning came as thousands of visitors were expected to arrive in Nuwara Eliya for the season.

A special security plan has been put up by the Nuwara –Eliya Police for the April festivities in Nuwara –Eliya, SSP Mahendra said.

“From today (April 10) the town will be divided into 8 zones with 791 Police officers on duty,” he said.

A Special Traffic Control Unit will be set up. To reduce the expected traffic jam near Gregory Garden, vehicles will not be allowed to park along the road from near the Gamini National School on the Badulla Road up to to the Mahagastota Junction.

Three parks for vehicles have already been set up opposite the Gamini National School.

Schoolbands herald the season in Nuwara Eliya

“ A team of life saving police officers will be deployed near Gregory Garden and Kande Ela Reservoir. Drunk driving and bad behaviour among the public will be strictly dealt with,” SSP Mahendra said.

Meanwhile various events lined up for the season have already commenced. One of them was selection of the healthiest baby while other events included musical shows.

The season was officially opened last week with school bands taking part on the occasion.
