All Ministries and Departments have been ordered to cut their power consumption by 10% every month, Power & Renewable Energy Ministry Secretary Dr B.M.S. Batagoda told the Sunday Times.

In order to implement the proposal an ‘Energy Officer’ will be appointed in each of the public institutions, who will be responsible to plan the reduction in electricity consumption and its implementation, he said.

They will take into consideration bills for three months and work out an average from which the consumption will have to be reduced by 10%.

The officer will plan to switch off air conditioners, fans, lights and other electrical equipment used unnecessarily.

“We expect the measures to help reduce power consumption in State institutions by 300 MW. This is equal to the power generated by one of the plants at Norochcholai,” he said.

The officer appointed for the task will be rewarded with foreign trips, while institutions reducing power consumption will be given concessions on the bills.

Meanwhile, selected State institutions including the Port, Airport and the Central Bank have been informed that the CEB will pay them to generate their own power.
