Colombo’s Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya has ordered the arrest of a suspect who through his Facebook page allegedly called for the assassination of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The judge ordered the Immigration Controller to arrest and hand over the suspect to the CID after the Cyber Crimes Division of the CID told him that the suspect’s Facebook messages posed a serious threat to the President and the Prime Minister.

The account is maintained under the name of Sumal Lakmana. One of the messages posted has a voice clip calling ‘any brave soldier’ to join hands with him to assassinate the President and the Prime Minister.

The CID claims that it was an attempt to incite the security forces personnel and therefore was a punishable offence under the Penal Code.

The suspect had left the country on June 13, 2013, according to records of the Immigration Department.
