The Constitution Committee is expected to finalise its report by the end of April.

So far the committee has held public sittings in sixteen districts and depending on the demands it will hold public hearings again in Colombo and Jaffna.

“We could not finish the process in some of the districts because there was so much demand from the people to get their views heard. Therefore we will have sittings again in those districts,” Mr. Wijenayake said.

After public hearings end on March 31, the committee will meet religious leaders, representatives of main political parties, trade unions and civil society groups. It will also meet chief ministers and provincial councillors.

Mr. Wijenayake said the committee had so far received 1,170 oral submissions, about 500 emails, 383 written submissions, 105 faxes, 37 Facebook messages and 51 phone calls.
