Minster of Power & Energy, Champika Ranawaka said that Sri Lanka has the highest number of female undergraduates for higher education compared with other Asian countries.

“Our student population in higher education institutes in this country is 70% women. Sri Lanka is one country providing free education irrespective of caste, creed, religion, gender or ethnic differences,” the Minister said at a function held this week.

He said that it is a tragedy that the end result of the investment in free education is the brain drain to other countries.

He made these observations at the Scholarship awards ceremony held for children of Petroleum Corporation employees entering Universities. Some 20 students received scholarships.
