The Colombo University’s, Dept of Sociology has re-launched its Seminar series for 2015, where eminent scholars of various disciplines will make presentations throughout 2015.

The 2nd Seminar for March will be held on Monday, March 23, at 12 noon in the Seminar Room of the Dept of Sociology, and is open to all.
There will be two presentations, with Prof Bishnu Charan Barik’s presentation of ‘Agrarian Structure and Migration of Labour: Reflections on the Process of Mobility’, and Dr Smita Verma’s presentation of ‘Gender and Sexual Assault in Contemporary India’.

Prof. Bishnu Charan Barik is a Senior Professor of Sociology (former Director) in the School of Social Sciences, Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University, Nanded (Maharashtra State) and was the Vice-Chancellor of Sambalpur University, Jyoti Vihar, Burla, Sambalpur, Odisha from 2011 to 2014. His areas of research interest are Agrarian Studies, Migration, Weaker Sections, Dams and Displacement and Water Management.

Dr. Smita Verma is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Women’s Studies at Isabella Thoburn College, Lucknow, India. She did her MPhil and PhD at Jawaharlal University, New Delhi. Her areas of specialisation are Gender across life span and Social Gerontology. She has completed two major projects sponsored by UGC, New Delhi on the issue of ‘Women and Leadership in India’, and ‘Fertility Behaviour among Slum Dwellers’.
