Former Commissioner of Elections, Chandrananda de Silva passed away yesterday (21) at the age of 78.

An old boy of Rahula College, Matara, and alumnus of the University of Peradeniya, Mr de Silva joined the Civil Service and assumed duties as the Commissioner of Elections on May 4, 1982.

The new system of elections as adopted in the 1978 Constitution, came into operation during his tenure. Both the Presidential Election and the Referendum came with this system. The Parliamentary General Elections Act was amended to include the system of Proportional Representation.
He served as Defence Secretary in former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga’s regime. He also served as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.

Cortege leaves residence tomorrow (23) for cremation at the Borella Cemetery at 5.30 pm.
