Close taverns, bars within 500 metres of schools, places of worship: President

Liquor taverns and bars will not be permitted to operate in close proximity to schools and places of worship, President Maitripala Sirisena has ordered the Excise Commissioner.

Accordingly, 349 liquor stores and bars situated within 500 metres of schools and religious place will be closed.

President Sirisena ordered this at a Joint Prevention Committee meeting presided by him recently. Furthermore, the President has instructed the Attorney General to look into the possibility of introducing Laws and Regulations to strengthen rehabilitation of narcotic and alcohol addicts.
Sub-committees will also be appointed to organise tobacco and alcohol prevention programmes islandwide. (NF)
