The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) urged the newly appointed Northern Province Governor H.M.G.S. Palihakkara to reopen 89 schools in the Province, which were closed during the conflict period.

CTU General Secretary, Joseph Stalin told the Education Times that, of the 1,082 schools in the region, 89 schools remain closed as most of them are located in the former conflict zone or Higher Security Zone (HSZ).

“We have written to the Governor requesting him to take immediate measures to reopen these schools for academic activities. The people displaced from these areas too have not been resettled to date, hence, we appeal to the Governor to create a conducive environment for educational activities,” he said.

Indicating that the Palaly Teachers Training College has been within the HSZ for a long time without a reopening, he urged the Governor to remove military camps near schools.

In Jaffna District alone 16 schools in Valikamam Educational Zone, 5 schools in Vadamarachchi Zone, 5 schools in Thenmaradchi Zone and 15 schools in Kayts Zone have remained closed for decades. The rest of the closed schools are located in Kilinochchi, Mullaithivu, Mannar, and Vavuniya districts. (SR)
