Govt. to announce further relief measures

Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayaka will announce in Parliament on Thursday several measures to lower the high cost of living, in keeping with the promises made by President Maithripala Sirisena in his election manifesto.

These include relaxing of custom duties on 10 essential food items, as well as a pay hike of Rs 10,000 for public sector employees. The first installment of Rs 5,000 is to be paid with effect from next month.

Also in the pipeline is a monthly interim allowance for pensioners till their salary anomalies are settled, as well as an increase in the monthly
samurdi allowance
payment.

Government has set aside Friday, January 30, for a day long adjournment debate on the Finance Minister’s statement.
