The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has sought approval from President Maithripala Sirisena to include a representative from the Party in the proposed committee to draft amendments to the country’s Constitution, a senior member of the Party said.

SLFP General Secretary Anura Priyadharshana Yapa told the Sunday Times that the request was made during the first Central Committee meeting of the Party held under the chairmanship of President Sirisena.

“President Sirisena has agreed to the proposal to have a separate team from the SLFP, for their input to the proposed amendments,” he said.
He said that the SLFP team not named to date, will be finalised at the next Central Committee meeting.

President Sirisena, in his manifesto, pledged to introduce Constitutional amendments including limiting the powers of the executive president.
