Rajarata Maha Vidyalaya teachers, along with their Unions are threatening trade union action if police and Education authorities fail to act against the parents who assaulted the school’s principal recently.

The Principal, Ven. Girithale Sujatha Thera was assaulted by parents as he had punished some students for misbehaviour.

They had then lodged a complaint against the principal, after which the police arrested him and produced him in court, where he was remanded and later released on bail.

“The two mothers involved in the attack on the principal are free, while the principal of our school is being subject to unfair treatment,” a member of the school staff said.

The teachers went on sick leave on Tuesday, and said that, by Monday, if the Zonal Education Bureau authorities do not take action against the assailant parents, they would take further action.

“A complaint has been lodged with the police regarding the assault,” said Ceylon Teachers Union Chairman, Priyantha Fernando said.
He said the Ven. Thera was assaulted in the presence of the deputy principal, adding that, parents should not take matters into their hands and assault principals and teachers, as it undermines the entire education system.

Following this incident, 105 teachers of the school have requested transfers from the Zonal Education Director, who declined to comment on the matter.
