Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa will provide leadership to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) in its next campaign for parliamentary elections, former Minister Basil Rajapaksa said yesterday. He said the party would meet soon for talks on the immediate plans of the party.

Ex-minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said the former president would remain as the leader of the SLFP and UPFA.  These comments came amid reports that former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga was planning to take over the party on the basis that according to the present SLFP constitution the President of the country should be the leader of the party.
