Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena said the opening of Mahindodaya laboratories in over 100 schools, especially in the north and east, had to be delayed due to protests from Opposition political parties and trade unions in the sector.

He said, as a result of this, it is the students who have suffered.

The Minister also said that the usual practice of honouring and awarding scholarships to 10 students with the best results at the GCE AL 2014, also had to be stopped due to protests from the Opposition and unions as they thought this is a political move.

“The students receive scholarships every year from the President, and not because there is an election,” he said.
