Curtain comes down on Central Province TT
View(s):The curtain came down of a successfully concluded Central Province Table Tennis Championship for the Prime Minister’s Challenge Trophy 2014 at the Jagath Rajapaksa International Table Tennis Stadium, Kandy last week-end.
This tournament was organised and conducted by the Kandy District Table Tennis Association where fifteen girls’ schools and fourteen boys’ schools took part comprising of 110 teams and were played in A, B, C, D and E divisions in under 10, 12, 15 and 18 age groups.
It is praiseworthy to mention that highest number of players were from lesser privileged schools in the Central Province in spite of the heavy rains, floods and landslides occur in the region during this period. Presence of players from ‘Lanka Kids’ project were seen as the dedication of teacher coaches as well as parents and players of the lesser-privileged schools in the province.
It is unfortunate to note the absence of a few leading schools in the province in this tournament though the players of these schools show a more interest in taking part in tournaments which have individual events. It seems that the passion of ‘playing for school’ is no longer visible in students of this schools.
Several newly qualified ITTF/PTT Level I coaches, Tamara Hewage, Asha Wijeratne, Dimuthu Gamage, Nadeeka Delpitiya, W.G. Jayantha, V.K. Hewage, Sudesh Palihawadana and Shenal Dilruksha received their certificates at the function by the chie guest the Coordinating Secretary to the Prime Minister.
