Sari de Sylva

The certainty of death has taken away from us my classmate Sari. That class had the likes of P.T. Senaratne, Arjuna Dharmakiriti and Coilpillai Kirinde.

I first set eyes on him when both of us were in what was called the 5th Removed for we had done our OLs and were waiting to go up the ladder to prepare to enter the University. That class gave us the freedom to be taught by the likes of Norman Walter, Gordon Burrows, Fr. John Elliott and Bertie Dias.

I remember Sari as a crack wing forward. When he played for T.C.K., my brother-in-law Chandran Thiruchittampalan played for Royal. Thereafter, both of them played for the CR. and for Ceylon.

To Sari’s family in London and those in Sri Lanka, to Ranjan who excelled in medicine and in tennis, to Raji who was one of the five Lions in that superb team ably lead by David Frank, to Tony who boxed for Trinity and later on played Club rugger and for the Country, I say please be assured of my empathy, concern, love, blessings and prayers always. Sari who was a Buddhist, may he attain the Supreme Bliss of Nibbana.

May the turf lie gently on him.
