Foreign players took the spotlight at four Dialog Champions League 2014 football games which took place at different venues around the country yesterday. The remarkable performance of all came from Nigerian striker Ebenezar who struck a hat-trick for Super Sun in their commanding 4-0 win against Crystal Palace at the CR&FC ground in Colombo.

Nigerian striker Ebenezar recorded a hat-trick for Super Sun in their 4-0 win against Crystal Palace at Longdon Place

Ebenezar’s strikes came in the 12th, 48th and 61st minutes as Super Sun led the first half 1-0. Soon after the break the lads from Beruwala found the net without much hassle while demoralising the newcomers who are yet to impress the big league as Super Sun struck their fourth and final goal in the 64th minute. However in the final 30 minutes Crystal Palace forwards bolstered by their Nigerian striker fought hard to penetrate their opponent’s territory which was futile.

Powered by three Japanese players, the New Youngs recorded a smashing 3-0 win against the Pelicans in their home ground in Kurunegala. New Youngs, who had a shaky start in the competition looks well set make a comeback as the DCL 2014 reaches its halfway stage.

At Nawalapitiya, Navy Sports Club almost had the scare of experience a defeat but made a great recovery to hand the home team Upcountry Lions a 0-1 defeat. The halftime ended scoreless with Upcountry Lions, fielding a Serbian striker and two Nigerians who took much of the honour.

The glamour boys of football, Saunders was given a good run in their victory by their opponents, Thihariya Youth at Sri Bodhi ground in Gampaha. Despite being newcomers to the league the effort made by the Thihariya Youth players were commendable but the early goal by K. Udara, which came in the first half, was sufficient for Saunders to walk out as winners.

The game between hosts Kalutara Park and Army Sports Club was abandoned due to bad weather at Kalutara. Four more games will go down for decision in the DCL 2014 today.
