The annual Peoples’ Bank Super 7s Hockey Tournament organised by Seethadevi Girls’ School got underway at the Bogambara Stadium yesterday. This tournament, which attracts teams from all over the island, is being held for the twentieth time.

The Men’s and Women’s teams from the Air Force, who won the titles last year, are conspicuous by their absence. Vijaya College Matale won the Boy’s event in 2013, while Seethadevi GS and Pushpadana GS were joint champions.

Navy SC (A and B teams), Pushpadana and Seethadevi have qualified for the semi-final of the club event. Nalanda, Zahira Matale and Christ Church Matale are the frontrunners in the Boys’ event. Among the girls, Sangamitta Matale, Seethadevi and St. Anthony’s Convent Kandy should be in at the finish.

Results:

Boys: Vijaya Matale beat Maris Stella 1-0, Christ Church Matale drew with Ananda 0-0, Nalanda beat St. Aloysius 2-0, St. Thomas’ Matale beat Trinity 1-0.

Girls: Seethadevi beat Swarnamali 3-0, Visakha beat Gothami 1-0, Sangamitta beat Hemamali 3-0, St. Anthony’s beat Bishops 1-0.

Clubs: Police beat Old Kingswoodians 1-0, Blue Horse beat Maris Stella 3-0, Navy ‘B’ drew with Old Trinitians 0-0, Navy ‘A’ beat Kotalawala Defence Academy 2-0, Navy beat Pushpadana 2-0, Pushpadana beat Army 1-0, Seethadevi drew with Navy ‘B’ 0-0.
