The 10th annual hockey encounter between Bishop’s College and Ladies’ College ended with a 1-0 win in favour of Bishops College on the Astro Turf at Reid Avenue yesterday.

The game got off with Bishop’s playing a fast game and occupying the Ladies’ goal area for most of the first half. Within the first ten minutes Bishops were awarded with three short penalty corners but they lacked a plan to optimize on the given opportunities. Ladies defenders had a hard time in keeping away the marauding Bishop’s inners and mid fielders, but in the 20th minute in the first half Bishop’s scored the only goal of the match when No. 8 Thisari Sachinkala made a perfect field drive from the D which beat the Ladies’ custodian. Ladies’ started to attack the Bishop’s goal area but missed so many chances due to stray passes which was cleared by the stubborn Bishop’s defence.

At half time Bishop’s led one goal to nil.

After the changeover it was a new looking Ladies’ team with their mid-fielders occupying the Bishop’s D area where the defenders and goal keeper Shamika Somawansa of Bishop’s very wisely positioned themselves to clear the Ladies’ mid fielders away. In the 20th minute after the half time a golden opportunity was missed by inner Ishanka of Ladies’ College as she had only to scoop the ball into the goal but she was not quick enough as Bishop’s defenders challenged her and cleared the ball away.

The speed and energy that Bishop’s exhibited in the first half had vanished in the second half as Ladies’ lasses taking advantage kept on attacking the Bishop’s goal area but were unable to put the finishing touches. Bishop’s made many attempts in the dying stages of the game but failed in from scoring. The game was controlled by Damith Jayasena and Fazeer Lahir.

At the conclusion of the game Bishop’s players Thisari Sachinkala, Sachitra Munasinghe and Shamika Somawansa were adjudged Best Attacker, Defender and Goalkeeper respectively.

The Under-17 match was won by Ladies’ College 1-0 when Pankaja Weedagama scored off a penalty corner.
