The Zahira College Old Boy’s Rugby Association (ZOBRA) successfully conducted a rugby competition for the Under-10, 12, and 14 players of leading rugby-playing schools in and around Colombo. The event, Zahira Mini Rugby Carnival 2014 took place at the Zahira College ground in Maradana.

In the main tournament, the Under-14s, St. Joseph College Colombo won the Cup championship beating D.S. Senanayake College by 5-0, after scoring a solitary unconverted try. Ananda College survived a gallant effort put up by Prince of Wales’ College 10-7 to secure the Plate championship. Ananda scored from two unconverted tries while the Cambrians struck back with a converted try.
C.W.W. Kannangara Vidyalaya beat neighbours Wesley College 10-0 to clinch the Bowl championship after scoring from two unconverted tries. The Shield championship was clinched by Nalanda College who beat St. Benedict College 7-0 in the final. The winners scored from a solitary converted try.

Ananda College, D.S. Senanayake College, St. Joseph’s College, Mahanama College, Nalanda College, Royal College Panadura, St. Peter’s College, C.W.W. Kannangara MV, Wesley College, Thurstan College, St. Benedicts College, Prince of Wales’ College and hosts Zahira College fielded teams in each age category at this tournament.

The victorious St. Joseph’s College’s Heshan Fernando was picked as the best player in Under-14 category while his schoolmate Shehanda Umagiliyage was adjudged the best player in the Under-10 age category. Zahira College’s Mohamed Shazni became the best player from the Under-12 category.

Fawzan Anwer, former Chairman of Old Zahirians Sports Club Rugby Committee graced the awards ceremony as the chief guest while the General Secretary of Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) was the guest of honour.

Principal of the Zahira College, Trizvi Marikkar, Senior Vice Principal Ananda Ponnemperuma, Vice Principals, Rukshan Razak and Mohamed Shazuli, ZOBRA President M.M.K. Namiz, members of Board of Governors of Zahira College, Rizvi Niyas, Hilal Sanoon, Alavi Mukthar and old boys were also present at the occasion.
