Nine athletes to Youth Olympics

Nine young athletes along with seven coaches and two officials will represent Sri Lanka at the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games which will be held from August 16 to 28 in Nanjing, China. The event will feature 28 sports disciplines but Sri Lanka will be represented at six sports.

They are swimming, athletics, badminton, beach volleyball, rowing and tennis. Machiko Raheem will compete in Girls’ 50metre and Girls’ 100metre Freestyle events while Matthew Abeysinghe will compete in the Boys’ 100metre and 200metre Freestyle and 100metre Butterfly Stroke events. Manoj Abeysinghe will accompany the two swimmers as the coach.

Anuradha Randunuge is expected to compete in the Boys’ 400metre Hurdles event and will be under the radar of Coach Priyantha Bandara. Thilini Hendahewa and Sachin Dias will represent Sri Lanka at badminton under the watchful eyes of Coach Sankar Annamalai. Thilini will compete in the Girls’ Singles while Sachin is expected to contest in the Boys’ Singles. It is unclear if the duo will be featured in the Mixed Doubles event.

Chamika Perera and Isuru Madushan, under the guidance of their coach J.H.M. Danapala will represent the country at beach volleyball while Mario Gunatillake will be the sole competitor in rowing. He will be assisted by Coach Anthony Fernando. In tennis Sharmal Dissanayake is expected to compete in the Boys’ Singles and will be assisted by coach Ashutosh Singh. Pradeep Nandana will lead the Sri Lankan contingent as Chef de Mission while Ishika de Silva travels with the group as the Young Ambassador.
