University of Colombo back after rowing in Malaysian waters

The oarsmen and oarswomen of University of Colombo placed 11th with a tally of 22 points, at the Varsity Boat race 2013, conducted by the University of Teknologi Malaysia and the Ministry of Higher Education at the Putrajaya Water Sports Complex in Malaysia last week.

The University team consisted of 11 men lead by Praveen Liyanage and 9 women lead by Chandula Walgama. Senerath Alwis (Instructor, Physical Education) accompanied the crew as the team manager, while the team was coached by Lloyd Sirimanne with the assistance of Yaso Indrani Sirimanne.

The University of Colombo rowing team after emerging victorious

The competition was held with the participation of 15 local (including Universiti Teknologi Malysia,Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia and International Islamic University Malaysia) and 12 international (including University of Nottingham, Chinese University of Hong Kong,National University of Philippines). Meanwhile the institutions that participated first time this year included Australian University of New South Wales and from Sri Lanka the Kotalawela Defence University.

The Malaysian waters witnessed heightened competition this year as the international and national teams performed improve the overall event timings. University of Colombo team participated in the races of Men’s 8+, Men’s 2- , Men’s Lightweight 2X, Men’s Lightweight 4-, Men’s 1X, Women’s 8+, Women’s Lightweight 2X, Women’s 4- and Women’s 1X from which most of the boats qualified into semi-finals. In the 8+ event the University of Colombo Men’s team recorded 7:16:26 placing 7th ,8:08:43 placing 5th in 2012 and Women’s team obtained a timing of 8:06:11 placing 7th ,8:24:84 placing 7th in 2012. In the Coxless fours event the Men’s team qualified into the semi-finals with timings of 7:29:02, 7:54:72 in the previous year.)
In the final round Women’s lightweight coxless-four (Rashni Anandawansa, Ayudhya Gajanayake, Madhavi Andradi, Chandula Walgama) obtained 3rd place and took home a bronze.
