The new council members of the Institute of Personnel Management (IPM) for the year 2013 – 2014 were recently elected. Being designated responsibility for the most prestigious HRM institution in Sri Lanka, especially at a time when the institute is taking bold and swift strides towards firmly establishing the human resource management (HRM) profession in the country, the new council will essentially be playing a significant role.

The new council’s vision is to continue further developing the HR profession in Sri Lanka and according to the President IPM, Samitha Perera, they have a four-tier plan focusing on: an Institute definition for HR; Create new platform for certification; adding value to IPM’s membership; and IPM to be effectively equipped with HR tools for industry.

The new definition for HR will involve a competency framework for the profession at the different levels which will essentially bring the profession as well as the IPM to the forefront as well as being on par with any industry in the country. IPM also plans to add value to its membership as well as to the members: Training programmes, professional qualifications, international exposure, and international member exchange programs are lined-up for the IPM members.

The new council will also focus on developing industry specific HR tools, spotlighting on developing the human talent in the respective industries. HR tools are an entirely new focus area for IPM and its present professional competency and its foothold in the industry provides the institution with the leverage as well as the capacity to do so.
