The Individual Qualifying Air Rifle Shooting Meets 2013 for the North Central and Northern Provinces were held successfully at Maithreepala Senanayake Central College in Medawachchiya last weekend.

The notable outcomes from these qualifiers were the sprouting of five shooters, three girls and two boys, who emerged as ‘sharp shooters’ in their inaugural outing.

Harshini Pemasiri of Medawachchiya Central and Thayani Sri Sithamparalingam and Piratheepa Kumaravel of Nelliady Central Jaffna were the girls to take the honour of emerging as sharp shooters in their first outing. The two boys to earn the rare honour were Sachintha Tennakoon of Anuradhapura Central and Madushanka Chandrasekara of Medawachchiya Central.

From the overall count, 17 shooters, 13 from the North Central Province and four from the Northern Province became the best out of a pruned down set of 45 competitors, who were picked after taking their performances into consideration. From the North Central Province Harshini Pemasiri of Medawachchiya Central topped the girls after achieving 80 marks. Three girls, Upekha Kumarasinghe, Hiruni Maleesha and Dilki Harshani, all from Medawachchiya Central were named as merit performers after achieving marks between 70 and 79.

From the boys’ segment, Sachintha Tennakoon of Anuradhapura Central and Madushanka Chandrasekara of Medawachchiya Central accumulated 84 marks each to lead the group. Seven others achieved merit recognition for their achievement between 70 and 79 marks. Deshapriya Seneviratne and Lakmal Madushanka of Anuradhapura Central and Sachin Vimukthi, Supun Dissanayaka, Prashan Sisira Kumara, Kavinda Jayasuriya and Sanjula Samaraweera of Medawachchiya Central were the merit performers from North Central.

Out of the four recipients to achieve above the range of 70 marks from the Northern Province, three were girls. Incidentally all four winners represented Nelliady Central College Jaffna. Thayani Sri Sithamparalingam achieved 86 points, the best recorded from the whole competition while her teammate Piratheepa Kumaravel obtained 81 points. Both became sharp shooters for their extraordinary performances. Shamande Nithiyananthan reached the 70 to 79 marks range and become one of the two merit performers. The other merit performer was Bastian Santhosh who was the only boy from the whole of North to achieve such a feat.

In addition to the qualifier meet, a coaching camp was conducted under the supervision of nationally and internationally qualified board of referees and coaches. The entire programme was conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Shooting Sports Association, under the able guidance of its technical advisor, Captain H.S. Weerasuriya. -
