Test umpire Ponnathurai’s funeral today

Former Test umpire S. Ponnathurai passed away on Thursday. He was a Vice President and the Honorary Treasurer of the Association of Cricket Umpires Sri Lanka (ACUSL). He was also a former match referee and instructor in umpiring at SLC and Association of Cricket Umpires Sri Lanka

He was also involved with the Amateur Athletic Association as a Judge. He officiated at the SAF Games as and athletic judge. He served as a senior assessor at the income tax department.

Selliah Ponnathurai born on April 25, 1935 passed away at the age of 78. He did his primary studies at St. John’s College, Jaffna where indulged in the game first.

After leaving school he entered the field of umpiring and made it to the top and made his debut in international cricket on September 6 1985 when he was chosen to stand in a Test match between Sri Lanka and India.

He stood at two more Test matches and his last Test match was also at a Test match between Sri Lanka and India.

Umpiring debut in ODI: Sri Lanka Vs. Australia at SSC,Apr.30, 1983 and his last ODI was Sri Lanka Vs. England at R Premadasa Stadium,Mar.10,1993
The funeral will be today at 10.00am from Jayaratne Funeral Parlour Borella.
