My impressions on 20-over cricket

View(s):

I like to express my views on 20 over cricket since, during my era up to the time of playing for Sri Lanka, the only cricket I played from school level onwards was unlimited one day (junior cricket) and games lasting for two days or more.

I still enjoy watching the 20 over or 50 over game. The main reason is the game is result- orientated. Hence the excitement, with the players doing their utmost to achieve victory for their side.

By playing 20 over cricket one does not learn the technical skills of the game. However I feel it should never be encouraged throughout one’s career in playing for the school, for it is at this stage that technical skills can be imparted by the School Cricket Coach.

For the viewers of 20 over cricket, it is a game that could be watched by a family irrespective of whether the rules of the game are known. As for entertainment, we like to watch a tele-drama where there is action. In the same way many of the viewers like to watch powerful shots played with the ball speeding to the boundary or going over the boundary ropes.

I feel this game is best suited for players who are strong and play powerful shots or where the shots are played skillfully and placed to go past the fielders. Also the bowler could be admired if he is skillful enough to prevent the batsman scoring and also is able to get wickets at an important moment.

As for the spectators, the game becomes very exciting where the result is going to be touch and go.

With respect to those playing 20 over cricket, normally players selected are those who have come to the top level of cricket and are capable of adopting their style of playing to any format of the game.

Also I feel those who are playing this game must be very good fielders and the nicest thing in this game is to see a player taking a spectacular catch or effecting a run out due to some smart fielding.

As for players trying to earn more and more money by playing cricket that should never be stopped for it is human nature to earn more and more as long as it is earned in a gentlemanly and honest way.
