Wayamba University awards Hon. D.Sc. for ‘long term service’

An honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degree was awarded to Prof. M.A.K. Lakshman Dissanayake in recognition of the invaluable long-term service rendered by him for the development of scientific research and science education in Sri Lanka, at the General Convocation – 2012 of the Wayamba University held on May 28 at the BMICH.

Professor Dissanayake served the University of Peradeniya for more than 40 years as Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Professor/Senior Professor as well as Head of the Department of Physics and Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Science (PGIS). Currently he is a Research Professor at the Institute of Fundamental Studies (IFS), Kandy, and Professor Emeritus at University of Peradeniya.

Prof. Dissanayake has a B.Sc. (Physics) from the University of Ceylon (Peradeniya) and a Ph.D. in Experimental Solid State Physics from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, USA. During his period of service at University of Peradeniya, he made numerous contributions to develop Physics Education and Physics Research.

He was instrumental in initiating from scratch, Physics research activities at Peradeniya in 1985 in collaboration with International Programmes in Physical Sciences, Uppsala University, Sweden and Chalmers University, Sweden. He was the first Professor of Solid State Physics in Sri Lanka. He has been a visiting Professor at the University of Aberdeen, UK and University of Illinois at Chicago, USA and a visiting post-doctoral Research Fellow at Chalmers University, Sweden and University of Oklahoma, USA. He was responsible for organising several international and national conferences to promote Solid State Physics and related research in Sri Lanka.

Professor Dissanayake was awarded the ‘Vidya Nidhi’ by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge in 2005 and received the Committee of Vice Chancellors and Directors (CVCD) Award from President Mahinda Rajapaksa in 2010 for the Most Outstanding Researcher in Physical Sciences.
