Baring his bold strokes

Two years ago, Dinusha Uthpala Upasena displayed an impressive collection of work at the Lionel Wendt Gallery. His new solo exhibition of oil paintings, at the same gallery, is called Unmeelana. His pictures reflect his personal interpretation of the teachings of the Tantra and the Upanishads.

He rejects totally the notion that human sexuality should be a taboo subject for Sri Lankan artists. On the contrary his images celebrate the sexual bond between Man and Woman, the very basis of the survival of the human race, as something sacred, beautiful, and profound.

Influences of some of the artists that Dinusha most admires can be detected in this exhibition, particularly in his bold use of colours, which recalls Rembrandt, and his fast brush strokes, which are also characteristic of the latter but more especially typical of Lucian Freud.

Visitors should be warned that they may find some of the images disturbing or even shocking, due to their subject matter and heightened by the intensity of the artist’s interpretation.

This challenging exhibition is on at the Lionel Wendt Gallery from June 14 to 16.
