The SLIIT Sports Council conducted the institute’s Colours Awards ceremony- a dazzling event which brings together its sports enthusiasts, students, officials and special invitees- recently at their Malabe Campus.

A total of 133 students received awards from a field of 1000 players engaged in sports such as badminton, table tennis, carrom, cricket, soccer, rugby, basketball, tennis, swimming, rowing, netball, volleyball, athletics and baseball.

Gayani Anuthara Perera received two special awards at the event and was recognised as the Outstanding Sportswoman of the Year 2012 and Best All-round Student (Sports) of the Year 2012. The Outstanding Sportsman of the Year 2012 was awarded to Umesh Anthony Fernando. Professor Willie Mendis, Emeritus Professor – University of Moratuwa, graced the occasion as Chief Guest.
“We are extremely proud of our students’ achievements in sports” states Professor S. Karunaratne, Chairman of SLIIT. “We aim to not only provide top quality academic opportunities, but also allow students to avail themselves of the myriad opportunities made available to them to further their personal development”.

President and CEO of SLIIT Professor Lalith Gamage commented in this regard; “I strongly believe that engaging in Sports will lead to the development of those attitudes and skills required for academic studies and intellectual development. Sports will help to develop confidence and also a student’s personality which could lead to better employability. These achievements indicate that SLIIT is emerging as a leading Institute in the Sports arena of the Higher Education Institutes in the country”.

men’s and women’s badminton at the International University Badminton championship, winning the basketball men’s championship at the Inter-University Basketball tournament, winning the men’s tennis championship at the Inter-University Tennis championships, and securing a bronze at the badminton women’s singles event at the seventh International Sports Fiesta in Malaysia, a first for Sri Lanka in this tournament. SLIIT students have also won awards in cricket, rugby and soccer tournaments organized by tertiary educational institutes.
