A big schools sports event is planned at an indoor- stadium in Panadura. The sport is played on a ping-pong table. Sports followers say that this venue is not suited for a contest of this nature as it has poor lighting and the tables where the sport is to be played are shaky. There had been instances where sports of this nature had to be cancelled because of these factors. The venue has been suggested by the secretary of this sports body as he is from the area.
Avurudu Salli
A hotel in Hanwella was a hive of activity as two sports team had been lodged there for a training session. One was a set of male players and the other women. Insiders, however, say that the hotel is of ill-repute. But this strange thing is that the hotel had been recommended by a former Sports boss. The teams who were lodged during the Sinhala New Year had also been approached for ‘Avurudu Salli’ (Festival Money) by those who are working in the hotel.
Big Farce
Currently players are being picked for a cricket tour in the Caribbean and the young players are being questioned about their availability to make the tour. Those who are in the know say that the team has already been selected and this questioning of the youngsters is only a big farce in order to show the world that every aspect is being looked into before the final tour squad is announced.
No funds
Sports lovers are waiting eagerly to see how our players will fare at the key ping-pong events to be held in France and India next month. It looks as if the best will not be able to make the tour to France as they have been asked to fork out SLR 300,000 each for the tour and the organizers are not even making an attempt to get donations and sponsors. The trip to India seems to be in control as the expenses are not that much. Two key women players will not be able to go to France as they have no funds.
Full hospital
There is a big commotion in the Citadel as all who have been selected to hold office are asking for rooms! The Boss is however not deterred by these requests. He has said that if all of them cannot be given rooms, he will find rooms for them at a leading private hospital. So it looks as if the hospital too will be full of them.
‘No’ to new changes
The new boss as a much talked about popular sport is full of ideas. However there are some who are questioning: What can he do! This man is making a great effort to uplift the standard of the game and to give it a new look. His opponents are secretly discussing whether his efforts will be successful. It looks as if there are some who do not like new changes.
