It’s every bride’s dream to be a vision of loveliness on the most special day of her life. Amber, a bridal service by Anushka Perera de Fonseka bases her offerings on creativity and trendiness. “It’s a fast moving field. I like creative ideas and every day in the job opens up a whole new world,” says Anushka.

A product of Holy Family Convent, Colombo 4, Anushka has been doing bridal jewellery since 2011, but launched her bridal dressing business only last year. She also does casual and formal jewellery.

“For a bridal I do the dressing, the jewellery and flower decor including the bride’s bouquet and hall décor as well. Most of the brides I dress are Sri Lankans living abroad returning for their wedding. They contact me via email or through my facebook page and let me know what they want, send me pictures of the bridal saree and I match the jewellery and other accessories, order and keep it for them. I send them pictures of the jewellery along with the prices, colours etc so they know what options they have.”

All this hard work is not an individual effort for Anushka works with a team, comprising family members including aunts and cousins. She’s the main designer, and likes handling the makeup. Everything else is a group effort. “ It’s great having your family backing you up and supporting you. It also means I can provide almost everything that my customer desires. For instance, the people doing the flowers are my relatives and they have been in this field for about 20 years.”

According to Anushka, brides favour the Kandyan these days. “I like to dress a bride in modern Kandyan because it’s trendy. Though modern I always try to maintain that look of modesty in keeping with our culture. But it’s the bride’s choice,” she adds.

“Most brides still stick to white and shades of white. Pure white is used the most. Indian dressing doesn’t change. The colour favoured for the going away is still red, with an occasional green too. Hot pink seems to be trendy now although it doesn’t suit everybody. You must always do what suits you best, not what’s most expensive or what others say you should do,” she stresses.

When it comes to flowers, natural flowers cost more but Anushka says she advises using natural flowers for the church or the ceremony and artificial ones for the reception hall. “Most weddings revolve around a central theme these days. Most brides like to have the décor in pure white using only white flowers. While going for colour themes, some go for balloons and butterflies, she adds.
